I offer an engagement session in each of my wedding collections. Occasionally, I have clients ask if they can take the session out of their collection because they are having their photos taken by another photographer. But once I explain my reasoning for wanting to do this session with them, they are almost always on board! It’s not about not wanting to share you with another photographer. There are benefits to both the client and the photographer when working together before the wedding day. Here are a few reasons why.
The engagement session is often a couple’s first time being photographed together professionally. It is a great time to get comfortable in front of the camera as well as with your photographer.
Every photographer works differently. It’s important to get to know your photographer’s cues and what they are looking for during your session. This will make the wedding day portrait sessions flow so much more smoothly. I often joke with my clients that I’ve “trained them well” by the wedding day. After working with them during the engagement and even bridal session, they are so comfortable with me and in front of my camera that I don’t have to give as much direction, allowing me to capture their true and natural interactions. This also helps tremendously when we are on a tight time schedule.
Working together on the engagement session also allows your photographer to understand more of the style and look you hope to achieve in your wedding photos. Some clients prefer less serious shots, others want less profile shots. There’s no easy way to know this without having worked together. Understanding your preferences before the wedding day is so important in achieving photos you love.
You will probably spend more time with your photographer than any other vendor on your wedding day. As a photographer, my goal is to blend into the background and capture what is happening around me. I want my clients to be comfortable enough with me to be themselves. A wedding is so personal, and a time when you are surrounded by your family and friends. I love developing a relationship with my couples and being a part of one of the most special and exciting times of their lives.
Earlier this year, we were lucky enough to work on this amazing shoot with Leslie Herring Events. It began with a surprise proposal, followed by an intimate engagement party.
